Tax Law

Let’s be honest: no one likes taxes, and there seems to be a tax for everything and the state and federal level.

If you have a tax issue one of the first things we discuss is whether or not you actually need an attorney or if a good accountant would save you money instead. Tax attorneys can file returns and other forms, same as accountants, but only attorneys can represent individuals and businesses when it comes to tax disputes and tax litigation.

Business structure and individual tax planning

Limited liability companys, corporations, sole proprietorships, partnerships – each has a unique tax advantage and disadvantage and depending upon which business structure is utilized, it will have an impact on an individual’s personal tax returns.

Estate Planning & Probate

One of the most overlooked areas of estate planning is to have a good tax plan in place. Depending upon the value of your estate, there could be significant tax advantages to certain estate planning structures.

Tax Disputes, Litigation, and appeals

At both the state and federal level, if the government determines that you did or did not do something correctly with your taxes they will issue a notice. This notice allows for inter-agency disputes and potential resolutions without the need to go to court.

After all the internal agency disputes and appeals have been exhausted, if the government still takes an adverse position against you, the next step would be to begin litigation at the trial court level and then potentially the appellate court level if the facts of the case warrant it.
