International Law

International law is an extremely expansive body of law that covers many aspects of international relations. Our firm focuses on the business and compliance aspects of international agreements.

International Law in America

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has long been recognized as a powerhouse in international finance and business, along with the UK’s Admiralty Court having hundreds of years’ experience resolving disputes related to maritime shipping, contracts, and other legal issues related to the High Seas.

With the United Kingdom taking on a stronger use of sanctions it is important to ensure that any transaction does not violate the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI).

European Union

The EU has their own regulations that are supra-national compared to specific member countries. Examples of this include intellectual property rights that are registered at the EU level instead of for each specific country, although that is still possible.

Additionally data privacy rights have become increasingly an area of concern for the European Parliament who has enacted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which governs how companies both inside and outside of the EU store the data of EU citizens.

Global

There are several different global regulatory bodies and regulations that apply to businesses in different service sectors. Two of the most common involve trade agreement enforcement between countries within the World Trade Organization and contractual disputes under the United Nations Convention for the International Sale of Goods (UN CISG).

Also the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) lays out the generally accepted principles regarding transit through a country’s territorial waters to travel upon the High Seas. All global trade that involves ocean-going shipping is subject to the Law of the Sea at some stage of the journey.
